The Draft is Coming

Written on April 15, 2025

Don’t Move Up. Don’t Be Dumb.

Yeah, I haven’t posted in a bit - mostly because there’s been nothing worth saying. I’ve watched the videos. I’ve read the articles. It’s all just noise right now. Nobody knows anything. It’s draft season, which means every “report” is a smokescreen and every “source” is probably just a guess wrapped in a rumor.

That said… I saw a 49ers X (Twitter, whatever) account say there’s buzz that the Niners want to move up to No. 6. And all I can say is: WHY?

Seriously - why?

There is nobody after pick 3 that’s worth mortgaging the future for, especially not the OTs. So what are we doing here? What’s the plan? Because the last time we moved up like this, it turned out to be the dumbest draft decision in franchise history. You know the one.

If anything, we should be doing the exact opposite. Take a page from Bill Walsh and move back a spot or two. Stack picks. Build the roster. We have a lot of holes and not enough resources to patch them if we start tossing picks around like candy.

I talked about my draft crush Jihaad Campbell last time. Still love him. But I didn’t mention my next favorite: Kenneth Grant. That dude is legit. Overshadowed by his Michigan teammate Mason Graham, sure - but I think he might actually be better. He could be the best interior DT we’ve had since Buckner. And the best part? He’ll probably be there when we pick.

For his size, Grant is a crazy athlete immediately helping our run game in the “wide-9” 4/3 scheme we play on D.

Now, to be clear: don’t move down too far, either. There’s too much value in the tier right after Abdul Carter comes off the board. Sit tight. Use your picks. Don’t get cute. We’ve done that before, and it never works out.

Bottom line: nobody knows what the 49ers are going to do. But if they move up and lose next year’s first for anyone not named Abdul Carter? That’s reckless. And honestly, even doing it for Carter would be questionable. We need next year’s first. Period.

OK, I’m done. Just wanted it on record: don’t trade up. Don’t trade down (too far). Just draft smart and don’t screw this up.
